soft clothes for hot cities: what i actually wear to walk

by ramadhana bhanuharya krishnamurti (krishna / naquuuu) • notes on style

the style thesis

clothes are the layer between the body and the city. in a hot city that layer has to breathe, move and survive a cafe bench, a long walk and a cold room. so i dress in soft knits, short sleeves and shoes with a grip, and i keep the palette warm and small.

1. a shirt is a screen door

a hot city gives you two climates a day, the street and the cold room, and one shirt has to handle both. a short-sleeve button shirt in peach, the one i wear on a cafe bench with a cup in hand, works like a screen door. open at the collar when the air is still, buttoned when the room turns cold.

2. one soft colour on a dark ground

i paint, so i read a wardrobe the way i read a canvas. the ground is dark: round dark glasses, a dark tote, dark jeans. brown and navy sit close to it, in a brown knit and a navy cap. then one warm wash goes on top, and across the outfits on my instagram that wash is the peach shirt. painting has no ctrl+z and neither does a wardrobe, so one loud thing per outfit is easy to correct.

3. the zip is a thermostat

a quarter-zip knit sounds wrong for a hot city until the room runs cold. the zip is the control. closed in the cold cafe, open at the neck when you step outside. my brown knit shows up in more than one frame, including a night skyline shot from a glass-floor viewpoint, worn with the navy cap.

4. the tailoring shelf, and the shoe

the pieces i study are the ones that make the walk easier: single and double pleats on relaxed trousers, unlined jackets in linen, tropical wool and cotton twill, lugged soles, blundstones, walking loafers. my daily outfits are simpler than that list: knit, dark jeans, sneakers. the study is where the taste gets trained, and the pavement is where it gets tested.

start with the shoe

dress for the walk first and the photo second. choose the shoe you can wear across the whole city, then let one colour be the shirt.
