hotsand: thermal energy storage by team kancil (itb)
context
competition: schneider go green 2022. team: team kancil, a student team from institut teknologi bandung (itb). result: country favorite winner for indonesia. the concept was hotsand, a thermal energy storage proposal for off-grid rural villages, evaluated against karya jadi in south kalimantan.
batteries that wear out
remote indonesian villages such as karya jadi, south kalimantan, run on solar systems whose batteries deteriorate within 2 to 3 years, so the electricity supply becomes unreliable.
the chemical battery trade-off
importing chemical lithium batteries is expensive, carries fire risk, and the cells degrade rapidly in tropical heat.
silica sand as the store
the proposal used locally sourced dry sand as the storage medium, with electric heating taking the silica sand to 500c+, a longer-lifespan and recyclable alternative to chemical batteries.
insulation and conversion
vacuum insulation holds the stored heat, and a stirling generator converts it into electricity and heat for the village.
the modelled system
a 330 kg dry sand storage core paired with a stirling engine, modelled to dispatch 5 kva of nighttime electricity for 10 households.
reference case and platform
evaluated against the remote off-grid village of karya jadi in south kalimantan, and designed for potential integration with schneider ecostruxure.
academic concept note
this work was an academic competition proposal developed during industrial engineering studies at institut teknologi bandung (itb). it represents student techno-commercial modeling and systems design, not a tested commercial installation or physical field deployment.
country favorite winner
submitted to schneider go green 2022, the hotsand proposal was recognized as country favorite winner for indonesia, highlighting its focus on rural electrification and local material use.
